About
Daniel Taylor is a designer and furniture maker combining traditional furniture making with a modern mindset and unique aesthetic. His aim is to produce beautiful pieces that are truly valued by the user.
Dan’s personal focus is the integration of traditional skills and processes with a contemporary aesthetic, exploring how these methodologies can be brought forward into the modern day with a contemporary style. Dan believes that the integration and action of the maker in production is what gives a product its soul, and he tries to keep the connection between product and user, once so prevalent and now endangered, central in his own work.
Whilst Dan’s focus has been on the design and creation of wooden furniture, he has also developed pieces in metals, plastics and leather, not only furniture, but also homewares, accessories and lighting.
Dan's work has been featured in several exhibitions, including physical exhibitions such as the 3D Design end-of-year open exhibitions held in the summers of 2018 and 2019 and virtual exhibitions such as New Designers 2020. A live project he participated in was featured at the Plymouth Degree Show 2019. Dan's work is currently on display at the 3D Design Instagram Degree show 2020, New Designers 2020, and the IGNITE festival.
Dan's work has been displayed and sold at several events including the contemporary craft fair in Bovey Tracey (2019) and a range of student organised Pop-up events held on the Plymouth university campus (2019-20). He was also a key part of the organising committee for the group of students planning to attend the contemporary craft fair in 2020, which was sadly cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Daniel was a member of a trans-disciplinary team commissioned to design and produce a set of awards for the University of Plymouth Students Union, these awards were then presented at the Unions' annual Awards ceremony.
Dan represented designer makers at both a course and school level in his role as course representative for 3D Design: Designer Maker, a position he held through his second and third years.
In recognition of this work, and after nomination by his fellow students, Dan was highly commended in the Student Staff Teaching and Representation (SSTAR) awards in the "Course Rep of the year Award" category at the end of his third year.
